Curtain Measurements

All our curtains are measured in metric. Measurements are displayed width first (across) by depth second (length/height). Lengthways is measured from the top of the finished edge (where the rod or pole will be inserted) to the bottom. Scallop edge finish fabrics are measured to the longest point. What is meant by finished or ready to hang?

Our curtain panels are supplied finished, sewn with a 7.62cm pocket so they are ready to hang using a rod or pole. There is no sewing required.

What does “fine” and “heavy” cotton lace mean?

Our cotton lace is traditionally made on 19th century weaving looms, with weave sizes that range from 8 point to 14 point. The point number refers to size of the weave and thereby the overall appearance of the lace, (the bigger the point number the finer the weave).

A 14 point woven panel has the finest, smallest weave. It has the most delicate and most sheer appearance, is the most see-through and is classified here as the finest.
A 12 point woven panel has the second finest weave. It is therefore not the sheerest in appearance but still lets a good amount of light through and is classified here as medium-fine.

A 10 point woven panel has the second heaviest, biggest weave. It is therefore not the least sheer in appearance but provides a good amount of privacy and is classified here as medium-heavy.

An 8 point woven panel has the heaviest weave, biggest weave. It is the least sheer and least see-through lace and will provide the most privacy to your window and is classified here as the heaviest.

Our curtains are usually available and ready to be despatched to you from our factory in Ayrshire within 2-4 working days. Should this not be the case we will advise you immediately.

Size of curtain

We are pleased to offer all the help and advice we can about the size of curtain panel to chose. However, it is often a matter of personal preference regarding how much gather you require widthways, how much length and how much overhang you require lengthways on your curtaining. The amount of gather width ways affects the fullness of the fabric folds across the window, whilst the length or amount of overhang can make a difference to the overall effect on your window and the rest of your room. There maybe also practical considerations to consider too: Whether you have a window sill?: Which room is the curtain for?: What is the rest of the décor of the room like and how it compliments your room décor? Having given these factors some thought, what is most pleasing to your eye.

Shower Curtains

Our cotton lace shower curtains are approximately 180cm x 180cm in size and have an eyelet top for rings or clips. Our shower curtains are normally hung with a clear waterproof liner. Scotchguard can be used to protect the lace fabric against mildrew.

Customising our curtains

This service refers to the length of our curtains only. We are able to offer a customisation service that means that our curtain panels can be cut to your specified length and finished ready for you to hang. A minimal charge of £6.00 (ex VAT) per curtain panel applies to this service. Please complete the contact us form in “Contact Us” if this service is of interest to you with your details.

Care and Cleaning

Our fabrics are of the highest quality, long-lasting and low-maintenance. By following our simple care instructions, we guarantee our fabrics will provide many, many years of pleasure.

Cotton lace we recommend hand washing in a mild detergent in warm water, or a gentle, warm machine wash. Do not tumble dry. While the fabric is still damp; stretch it gently to retain its width and length. Cool iron. All our Cotton lace can also be dry cleaned.

Scottish Cotton Madras we recommend dry cleaning only.

Colour

Natural is a milky, unbleached white that is less brilliant in colour than many modern whites. Ivory is distinctively creamy in appearance, like clotted cream. There maybe a very slight variation in colour due to our products being made of natural yarns.

What is the difference between cotton lace and cotton madras?

These two fabrics are woven on different weaving machines and they have a very different appearance. Please see the explanations below:

Our cotton lace is Nottingham lace. What is Nottingham lace?

Nottingham refers to the 19th century lace looms on which the lace is woven and not where it is made. All our lace is made in Ayrshire, Scotland on Nottingham lace looms. Historically, Ayrshire was chosen as an ideal location to manufacture cotton lace because of the dampness of the air on the west coast of Scotland, and today we benefit from the weaving skills of the local workforce that go back several generations. We continue to manufacture our lace using the exact same processes used for over 100 years.

What is Scotch Cotton Madras?

Madras, was formerly known as Leno Weave Muslin, which is a luxurious muslin (or gauze) that is now uniquely made in Scotland. This cloth was originally made on handlooms in the 17th century, which were replaced by machine looms by the end of the 19th century. The fabric became known as Madras because of the huge amounts of it that was exported from Ayrshire to India in the early 20th century. Nowadays, genuine Madras is only woven using superior yarns such as cotton, wool or linen, requiring great weaving skill and due to the method of its manufacture taking considerably more yarn and time to produce. This accounts for its higher price than many other fabrics and the price of its imitators. Genuine Scotch Cotton Madras is a truly sumptuous fabric that is only made in our factory in Ayrshire.
